Sonneman Lighting

Rooted in Robert Sonneman’s modernist design philosophy, the brand has long favored clarity, function, and purposeful form over unnecessary decoration. Light becomes part of the architecture, shaping the atmosphere while allowing the surrounding space to remain open and balanced. 

This approach extends to modular and scalable systems such as Suspenders and Constellation. Their adaptable structures support different layouts and project needs, while durable engineering helps each installation remain relevant as interiors evolve. SONNEMAN is now part of Hudson Valley Lighting Group (HVLG), following the group’s acquisition of the brand in 2025.

Decide what the fixture needs to do. A chandelier can define a dining area or entryway, while a linear pendant works well above a long table or kitchen island. Flush and semi-flush ceiling lights suit rooms with limited ceiling height. Wall sconces can provide ambient light, illuminate a hallway, or place light closer to the face at a bathroom mirror.

Look at the direction of the light as well as the fixture type. A diffused LED bar spreads light across a wider surface, while exposed or downward-facing sources create more concentrated illumination. For bathroom grooming, lights beside the mirror usually produce fewer facial shadows than a ceiling light alone. Some SONNEMAN designs offer added mounting flexibility; Scepter bath bars, for example, can be installed vertically beside a mirror or horizontally above it.

Measure the ceiling height, the surface below the fixture, and the position of the electrical box. For a chandelier above a dining table, a useful starting point is a width equal to roughly one-half to two-thirds of the table width. Leave about 30 to 36 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the light. In an open walkway, maintain at least 7 feet of clearance below the fixture.

Do not rely on the fixture width alone. SONNEMAN product specifications may also list the body height, canopy size, adjustable cord length, minimum hanging height, and maximum hanging height. The 72-inch Lithe chandelier, for example, has a 20-foot adjustable cord and cable, with an installation range from 5 to 245 inches. It also requires an adapter on a sloped ceiling.

Check the exact configuration carefully before placing an order. Fino offers models with a sloped-ceiling adapter, while Fino Duo is not described as sloped-ceiling compatible. Large modular systems also need more planning than a standard pendant. Some Intervals configurations extend beyond 200 inches, so the ceiling layout, canopy position, support points, and power location should be confirmed before ordering.

Use delivered lumens to compare brightness. Wattage tells you how much power the light consumes, not how much usable light reaches the room. The number of LED elements can also be misleading because the output depends on the LED modules, optics, shades, and fixture structure.

Consider whether the fixture will provide the room’s main light or act as one layer within a larger plan. A decorative pendant with a lower lumen output may work well above a small table but may not replace ceiling or recessed lighting. SONNEMAN’s three-light Liquid model delivers 900 lumens, while the 72-inch Lithe chandelier delivers 2,000 lumens. The specification, not the apparent size in a photograph, gives the more reliable comparison.

Correlated color temperature (CCT) controls whether the light appears warm or cool. SONNEMAN’s current range includes options from 2200K to 4000K, although each model offers only selected temperatures. Lower values create a warmer appearance, while higher values produce a cooler white. Keep fixtures within the same open space at one CCT unless a deliberate contrast is part of the design.

Also check the Color Rendering Index (CRI), especially around artwork, food, clothing, or bathroom mirrors. Many SONNEMAN integrated LED products are rated at 90 CRI. The U.S. Department of Energy describes 90 CRI or higher as excellent color fidelity, while 80 CRI is the usual minimum recommendation for interior LED lighting.

A dimmable fixture will not necessarily work with every wall dimmer. Check the product’s listed dimmer compatibility before installation. SONNEMAN models may support electronic low-voltage (ELV), TRIAC, 0–10V, or a smaller combination of these systems.

The differences can occur even within the same brand. Liquid is listed for ELV dimming at 120V, while Lithe supports ELV, TRIAC, and 0–10V dimming across 120–277V. The dimmer, driver, control wiring, and supply voltage must match the exact fixture specification.

For integrated LED products, check the Field Serviceable line and download the spec sheet before buying. Several SONNEMAN models are marked as not field serviceable, so access to the driver, LED module, warranty coverage, and replacement support should be considered for installations where future maintenance will be difficult.

Start with the metal parts that remain visible after installation, such as the canopy, frame, and suspension hardware. On a slim design like Fino, these parts form most of the fixture’s visual outline. Satin Black creates a clear line against a pale ceiling, while Satin White lets the fixture recede into a white surface. Polished Chrome is brighter and more reflective; Satin Chrome has a softer, less mirror-like appearance. The Fino family includes these four finishes, although the available choices vary by fixture.

Pay close attention to brass finish names. Satin Brass, Brass, and Black Brass are different surfaces, not interchangeable labels for the same gold color. Scepter, for example, is offered in Polished Chrome, Satin Brass, and Black Brass. The darker Black Brass gives its metalwork more visual weight, while Satin Brass keeps the warmer tone without the same dark contrast.

Finish choices also differ from one collection to another. Chimes is limited to Polished Chrome and Satin Brass, while Grapes adds Satin Nickel and Brass to its available range. Check the written finish name rather than relying only on product photography, since reflections, room lighting, and screen settings can change how a metal surface appears.

Compare the fixture with permanent details in the same sightline, such as cabinet hardware, faucets, and window frames. The metals do not need to match exactly. They should either repeat a related tone or create a clear, deliberate contrast. Furniture is a weaker reference because it is more likely to change later.

Use the electrical rating to determine where the light can be installed. A damp-rated fixture suits locations exposed to moisture or condensation but not direct water. A wet-rated fixture is designed for greater exposure and is the safer starting point for uncovered exterior locations.

Do not treat wet rated and coastal suitable as the same specification. SONNEMAN’s Stripe wall sconce is cETL wet rated, but its product page separately marks the finish as not coastal suitable. Homes near saltwater should therefore check both fields rather than relying on the wet-location rating alone.

For wall lights, also review the extension from the wall and any ADA-compliance designation, particularly in narrow hallways or other circulation areas. For ceiling lights, confirm canopy dimensions, fixture weight, junction-box position, and sloped-ceiling compatibility before installation.

Specifications can differ between sizes and configurations within the same SONNEMAN collection. Always review the product page and spec sheet for the exact SKU before placing an order.
